Wiimote Rebirth is a project involving a connection between a human participant and the technological, nostalgic device, the WiiMote. With ambiguous gesture mappings configured by Machine Learning, automated sounds get generated from Max MSP according to the gesture, which connects to the Wiimote via a configured OSC connection. The parameters capable of getting manipulated in real-time relate to low pass filters, and resonance. The usage of the Wiimote as technological input was intentional for several reasons including playfulness and nostalgia. However, the most prominent reason was related to the notion of planned obsolescence.

The Wii released in 2006, and with the production of better hardware, components relating to the Wii started becoming somewhat obsolete. Therefore, instead of letting these technologies collect dust and eventually become waste, recycling these materials and finding new life for them can evoke impactful conversations concerning the world’s ecological and environmental status.
