Biography
Alex Cho’s practice revolves around the exploration and experimentation of computer-generated imagery and moving images, mediums that allow for iteration, discovery, and play. These elements serve as the building blocks of his work, shaping his creative approach.
Cho’s work frequently delves into themes of human behaviour, the concept of the body, and the relationship between the real and virtual worlds, blurring the boundaries between digital and physical existence.
Cho is a storyteller, a maker, and an artist. His multidisciplinary approach has required him to develop proficiency in a wide range of software, often pushing him to learn and master new tools quickly. This reflects his adaptability, problem-solving skills, and strong self-learning ability. With a passion for experimentation, Cho approaches his projects with whimsical and captivating intentions, aiming to evoke alternative realities through a lighter, more playful perspective.
Artist Statement
My work explores technology through the lens of the human mind and body, using computer-generated animation to bridge the gap between reality and virtuality. Through abstraction and surrealism, I create imagery that captivates the eye while prompting deeper conversations about the intrinsic connection between humans and technology. This underlying theme shapes all of my work, though each piece carries its own unique personality and narrative, evoking distinct human emotions such as nostalgia, boredom, or loneliness.
There is always 'proper' technique in the creation of art, but these set restrictions impose boundaries on one’s creativity. Therefore, my philosophy is to work without reservations or assumptions about how something should look. Working freely gives me the opportunity to explore new techniques that can lead to serendipitous results. In my view, creating art is not about following proper procedures, as doing so would prevent one from defining their artistic style. It is about straying from the norm and producing work that is unique, avant-garde, and potentially thought-provoking. I want my art to leave a lasting impression on viewers, and I believe this can only be accomplished by challenging tradition.
For me, creating is never about technique but rather the conceptualization and intention behind the work. Computer-generated animation allows me to explore the human mind and body while creating worlds that are unfamiliar yet eerily familiar. Mistakes and glitches become integral components of my projects, reflecting a human quality in the work. Instead of hiding these imperfections, I embrace them as part of the final result.
